Address: ul. Pod Grotami 2/6 , 97-200 Tomaszów Mazowiecki
Artificial caves located in the southern part of the city of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. They are the remains of an underground mine of glass sand, extracted for construction and metallurgical purposes in the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century. Grottos consist of numerous corridors, alcoves, alleys and halls. The largest excavation called the "Royal Hall" is 30 m long, 25 m wide and 3 m high. The largest cave is 120 meters long. Each cave had a different name, e.g. Boczna, Borsucza, Chowańcza, Ciemna, Jeziorna, Niedźwiedzia, Taneczna, and Thief. Sand was mined from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century for farming needs, and later for glassworks. The tsarist authorities issued an operating ban after one of the chambers in which a resident of Nagórzyce had died. Since then, they have become a local tourist attraction, and after bricking up the entrances have long been forgotten. Re-interest started the investment to renew the grottos with the financial support of the European Union. From June 2010, caves were made and adapted to be visited, and at the beginning of 2012, caves opened their doors for tourists. Currently, "Groty Nagórzyckie" are under the care of the Pilica River Open-Air Museum.
