Address: ul. Zamkowa 1 , 99-100 Łęczyca
A defensive edifice erected by King Casimir the Great. Construction probably began shortly after 1345, when the land of Łęczyca belonged to Prince Władysław Garbaty. King Casimir the Great, in agreement with the prince, could already then proceed to the implementation of the defensive assumption. The castle stands on a hill, is surrounded by a moat, which was fed with waters flowing near the Bzura River. It was entirely built of red brick. The stronghold in the original version was erected on a quadrangle plan. The whole is surrounded by a 10-meter wall, topped with an octagonal tower in the southwest corner. On the west wall there was a four-sided gate tower, with a prison in the lower part and a guard room above the gate itself. A two-story residential building was built in the courtyard, which adjoins the eastern and southern parts of the walls. After the construction was completed, the Łęczyca Castle was the royal residence of Casimir the Great. Then he served as the seat of the Łęczyca staroste. In 1406 the building was burned by the Teutonic Knights, but soon it was restored to its splendor. At present, there is a museum within the castle walls. In the artistic department of the institution portraits, cabinet furniture as well as Eastern and European weapons are presented. The painting gallery contains paintings on the subject of Italian art, portraits of rulers and people associated with the Łęczyca region. In the historical section you can see clay balls for slingshots and cannon balls, as well as fragments of the New House cornice. The ethnographic exhibition department, on the other hand, presents the stylized interior of a rural cottage from the beginning of the 20th century, which consists of 3 rooms and is equipped with original furniture and equipment from this area. The rooms have walls made of wooden, whitewashed logs, with small window openings and clay clay in the kitchen and in the chamber.
